EURECA-PRO Joins Forces with Other European University Alliances to Push for Erasmus+ Reform Supporting Joint Degrees

Leoben, 29 May 2026
EURECA-PRO has joined a growing coalition of European University Alliances calling for urgent reforms to Erasmus+ mobility funding in support of Joint Programmes and the future European Degree.

In a newly released position paper, the signatory alliances — INGENIUM, EU-CONEXUS, UNITA, YUFE, RUN-EU, FORTHEM, ULYSSEUS and EURECA-PRO — collectively representing 77 universities across 27 European countries, argue that the current Erasmus+ KA131 mobility framework is not compatible with the structure of Joint Programmes.

At present, Erasmus+ funding limits long-term student mobility support to 12 months per study cycle. According to the alliances, this restriction does not reflect the reality of Joint Programmes, where mobility across multiple universities is embedded throughout the entire degree pathway.

Strengthening European Education

The position paper comes at a pivotal moment for European higher education policy, following the adoption of the May 2025 Council Resolution on the European Degree label and the launch of the European Degree Exploratory Actions by the European Commission. While these initiatives aim to strengthen transnational education across Europe, the alliances warn that existing funding rules risk excluding many institutions and students from meaningful participation.

As an alliance committed to building innovative and sustainable European educational pathways, EURECA-PRO emphasises that accessible mobility funding is essential for the successful development of Joint Programmes. The proposed reforms would allow students enrolled in accredited Joint Programmes to receive Erasmus+ mobility support for the full duration of their studies, while also introducing greater flexibility and organisational support for participating universities.

The position paper further highlights that these changes could be implemented through adaptations to the Erasmus+ Programme Guide without requiring amendments to the Erasmus+ Regulation itself. According to the signatories, this would provide a practical and cost-effective way to advance the European Degree agenda and strengthen inclusivity within European higher education.

By supporting this initiative, EURECA-PRO reaffirms its role in shaping the future of the European Higher Education Area and promoting equitable access to high-quality transnational learning opportunities for students across Europe.
