Professor Konstantinos-Alketas Ouggrinis Elected New Rector of the Technical University of Crete

Professor Konstantinos-Alketas Ouggrinis of the School of Architecture has been elected as the new Rector of the Technical University of Crete, following the election process conducted by the members of the newly elected University Council on Friday, 12 June 2026, through a secret electronic ballot.

An architect and academic specialising in transformable and intelligent environments, Professor Ouggrinis graduated from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and holds a PhD in Architectural Studies and Building Technology. He was a Visiting Research Associate at the Harvard Graduate School of Design and has collaborated with researchers from Harvard University, the MIT Media Lab and MIT CSAIL. Since 2011, he has served as Director of the Transformable and Intelligent Environments Laboratory (TIE Lab) at the Technical University of Crete. His research focuses on responsive architecture, kinetic structures, smart materials and human-centred design, with particular emphasis on environments that actively adapt to users’ needs and experiences. His work has received international recognition, including the Europe 40 Under 40 Architecture Award in 2008, and he is the author of two books on transformable architecture.

The new Rectorate of the Technical University of Crete will serve a four-year term from 1 September 2026 to 31 August 2030 and comprises:

  • Professor Konstantinos-Alketas Ouggrinis (School of Architecture) – Rector 
  • Professor Danae Venieri (School of Chemical and Environmental Engineering) – Vice Rector for Academic Affairs, Lifelong Learning and Outreach
  • Professor Georgios Arampatzis (School of Production Engineering and Management) – Vice Rector for Finance, Technical Projects and Development
  • Professor Panagiotis Partsinevelos (School of Mineral Resources Engineering) – Vice Rector for Research and Innovation.
