From 26 to 28 May 2025, members of the EURECA-PRO student council had the honour of participating in the European Student Assembly (ESA) 2025, held at the European Parliament in Strasbourg. This high-level event brought together more than 200 students from across 65 European University Alliances (EUAs) to engage in a unique and ambitious democratic exercise at the heart of European policymaking.
The European Student Assembly is a flagship grassroots initiative aimed at empowering students to reflect critically on the future of Europe. Selected participants collaborate over several months to debate current issues, draft policy recommendations, and ultimately present their proposals to relevant stakeholders and decision-makers at both national and European levels.
Between February and May 2025, the selected students worked remotely in dedicated panels, each focused on one of eight thematic areas vital to the European Union’s future – ranging from sustainability and digital innovation to education, health, and democratic engagement. During this period, students participated in training sessions on policy drafting and moderation, engaged with expert speakers, and conducted in-depth research into the political and legal contexts surrounding their chosen topics.
Key Highlights
The culmination of this extensive preparatory work was the in-person assembly in Strasbourg.
Over the course of three days, participants met to finalise their policy recommendations, exchange views with peers from across Europe, and deliberate on key issues in plenary sessions held within the chambers of the European Parliament. The Assembly concluded with a formal vote on the proposed recommendations and included opportunities for direct engagement with EU-level stakeholders.
The involvement of our students in this important initiative highlights not only their dedication and competence, but also the importance of student voices in shaping the Europe of tomorrow.
